The 2026 NBA Draft is quickly approaching, and the noise couldn't be any louder, especially for the Washington Wizards.
Darryn Peterson is attempting to force his way to D.C., but AJ Dybantsa is the clear favorite to land in the DMV.
For Washington, being an attractive destination to top prospects is a new normal that the team and their fanbase could get used to, but the uncertainty surrounding which way the Wizards are leaning is beginning to add a bit of a frenzy to every rumor that comes out.
The Wizards have been deprived of a franchise star for over a decade, and at this point, the team's fanbase is growing impatient to know who the organization plans to build around moving forward.
Fortunately, NBA Insider Marc Stein's latest appearance on the All-NBA podcast seems to paint a clear for which direction the Wizards are leaning.
AJ Dybantsa is expected to be the No. 1 pick
Stein made it clear during his podcast appearance that, while the Wizards made it clear they'll entertain offers for the top pick, all indications suggest that Washington has no plans to move down.
As Stein said, Dybantsa is projected to go No. 1, and that perception changed from everything he's heard.
Considering the NBA Draft Lottery was largely considered as the sweepstakes for Dybantsa, it doesn't come as a total surprise to hear the insider suggests that the Wizards are expected to put all their chips in on the BYU standout.
Given the team already has a clear-cut answer at the point guard position in Trae Young, and the fact that Dybantsa's fit in the frontcourt gives them something they don't already have, makes the looming draft decision a no-brainer.
Until the Wizards officially turn the draft card in or make it clear publicly which direction they're leaning, speculation will continue to circulate.
Regardless, it feels like unless the Wizards land a blockbuster trade package to move down in the draft order, all indications suggest that Washington will be standing pat at No. 1 to select the franchise cornerstone that they've been long searching for.
And given the recent injury setback for Alex Sarr, it's clear that the team needs some good news to make their 82-game campaign worthwhile this summer.
It's safe to say that Dybantsa landing in the DMV is the exact news that will have the Wizards excited about what's to come.
