The Washington Wizards finally found some luck in the NBA Draft Lottery when the team stumbled upon the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft for the first time since 2010.
Washington owns the rights to make a franchise-altering pick in just over a month, but the team has yet to make a decision on which player will cap off their rebuild before the new tanking rules are implemented next season.
In fact, the Wizards haven't determined whether or not they'll stand pat at No. 1 to make a selection or if their willingness to hear out offers for their top pick will actually lead them to a blockbuster trade that removes them from the pole position in the draft.
Regardless of what Washington decides to do, NBA Draft analyst Sam Vecenie just made it crystal clear that the rest of the league already has a clear picture painted for the way the NBA Draft unfolds come June.
Sam Vecenie says AJ Dybantsa is consensus No. 1
IN a recent episode of the Game Theory Podcast, Vecenie revealed that lead evaluators within league circles, Dybantsa, are labeled as the preferred option at No. 1.
"I would say that, it's probably about 60% [AJ] Dybantsa, 21% [Cameron] Boozer, and 19% [Darryn[ Peterson," Vecenie revealed.
Obviously, Vecenie's conversation doesn't mean much, considering that unless any of the evaluators are from Washington, it doesn't offer much insight into who the Wizards could actually be leaning towards.
Regardless, if the Wizards are within the percentile that has Dybantsa pinned as the top pick in this year's NBA Draft class, which seems like a real possibility considering the percentages Vecenie laid out, Washington will almost certainly remain in the top spot to take who they'd believe is the top player in the draft.
Then again, if the Wizards' brass falls into the other percentile, a trade down strongly comes into play.
Wizards could trade down to capitalize on Dybantsa hype
Obviously, Washington has the final say in any decision that happens No. 1.
However, if the Wizards believe that there's a better prospect than Dybantsa or the fall off isn't much behind the BYU forward, Washington seriously could consider a move down to take advantage of the wave of teams hopeful for a chance to select Dybantsa.
There's still over a month for the Wizards' decision to be revealed, but based on the mixed reports, if Dybantsa is their guy, they'll stay at No.1, and if he's not, the team will likely consider a move down with a team like the Utah Jazz at No. 2.
