The grin of Wizards legend John Wall radiated through the room, a beam of pride. After months of anticipation, the Washington Wizards secured the #1 pick during Sunday’s NBA draft lottery.
With the acquisition of the top pick, the Wizards have some tough decisions to make. This draft class is widely regarded as one of the best in recent years, with BYU’s AJ Dybansta, Duke’s Cameron Boozer, and Kansas’s Darryn Peterson standing out at the top.
According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, however, the Wizards may have other plans.
Fischer reported that Washington is expected to “at least consider” trading back in the first round, if GM Will Dawkins determines there are two or three players the Wizards are eager to come away with.
Fischer’s report is one that will cause debate amongst fans. The #1 pick has been traded just 7 times in the NBA, with the results rather varied.
With an end goal of championship aspirations, however, trading the #1 pick is something the Wizards should seriously consider. By obtaining more capital, Washington could pave the way for an even brighter future, beyond the contributions of any singular rookie.
A small move down would make sense for Washington
The talent within this draft class will surely be tantalizing for the Wizards, given their roster-wide needs. It’s easy to imagine all 3 of the projected top prospects being great fits in Washington, due to their dearth of shooting and upside defenders.
The Wizards may fall in love with one of these 3 players, making them eager to make the #1 pick. But there’s also a chance that, like most experts, the team views all of them favorably.
In this case, it may be worth Washington’s time to check in with Utah and Memphis, in an attempt to facilitate a small trade down. The construction of either team’s roster may cause them to prefer one player, leading to a desire to jump over the Wizards.
Even a small, one-pick jump could give Washington a serious haul. The last time the #1 pick was dealt, in 2018, the Philadelphia 76ers gave up a future first-round pick, along with their #3 overall pick, to acquire Markelle Fultz.
A future first, especially from teams like Memphis and Utah that compete in the loaded Western Conference, could be incredibly valuable. If offered, it’s something Washington must consider, continuing to stockpile assets and build out their roster.
A large trade-down seems more unrealistic
While a small move back may be justified, a trade further down into the lottery may be a harder sell for Wizards fans. The report doesn’t specify how big a trade down Washington will “consider”, but a large trade back seems unlikely for GM Will Dawkins.
The NBA continues to look at new “anti-tanking” laws starting in 2026-27, flattening the odds and punishing losing franchises. These rules could potentially impact the Wizards’ hopes of getting the top pick again, with proposed changes preventing teams from picking in the top 4 in back-to-back years.
Given the uncertainty, the temptation to trade far back will likely be less for the Wizards. In knowing that this could be their lone window for 2 years, the team must prioritize a chance at transformational young talent.
