The Washington Wizards are in a spot moving forward where they're in position to potentially make a blockbuster move if the correc deal presents itself.
Not only do the Wizards have an underrated young group, but they have also acquired multiple draft picks that could potentially help them in any future deals that they deem worth offloading draft capital.
Although the Wizards have the assets to make a big deal happen, that doesn't mean they should make a move just to make one. It has to make sense for the franchise and their future, especially if they hope to return to contention sooner rather than later.
However, if a move makes sense, Washington could be a sleeper to make a move for a disgruntled star, similar to the Toronto Raptors when they came out of nowhere to land Kawhi Leonard after his time with the San Antonio Spurs came to an end,
A recent trade suggestion from Bailey Bassett of ClutchPoints linked the Wizards as a potential suitor for Ja Morant if the Memphis Grizzlies move the star guard. Let's examine if this move would be bold, or simply just a mistake.
Wizards land Morant in blockbuster hypothetical
In this potential deal, the Wizards would land Ja Morant in exchange for Jordan Poole, Kyshawn George, AJ Johnson and multiple future first-round picks.
Obviously, this deal would by quite the commitment not only because the Wizards would be offloading multiple young pieces in exchange for Morant, but with four future first-round picks being sent out, they're essentially auctioning off a bulk of their future assets for a star that the league seems to be down on.
Morant averaged 23.2 points, 7.4 assists and 4.1 rebounds this season, while shooting 45.4% from field goal range and 30.9% from three. The Grizzlies star seemed to put it altogether down the stretch and he look poised to help Memphis earn a game in their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder before a tough fall ended his season.
The talent is there, but it's still undecided if he can be a building block for a championship team and if the Grizzlies move on from him, it's clearly because they didn't feel like he could elevate them to the level they wanted to get to.
So if it doesn't work out in Memphis, why would it work out in Washington. Especially considering Morant has absolutely no ties to the Wizards organization and if they don't show promise in the coming future, he could look for every reason to leave when he gets the chance.
Verdict: BIG MISTAKE
