Tyus Jones becomes first player in NBA history to achieve this feat
By Arrick Joel
On Tuesday night, the Washington Wizards dropped the last game of a brief two-game homestand to the Golden State Warriors. Careless turnovers and a lack of production from the bench painted an ugly picture for the Wizards, who find themselves 40 games under .500 coming off the loss.
As a team, the Wizards committed 20 turnovers against the Warriors, their fourth-most in any game this season. Despite the outcome, Wizards guard Tyus Jones shined, recording a career-high 17 assists with just one turnover in the loss. Tuesday's performance was yet another example of the strong playmaking ability Jones has put on display during this recent run of solid games.
Tyus Jones' recent streak among best in NBA history
Over his past six games, Jones has posted 79 assists while turning the ball over just eight times. In NBA history, those statistics have been matched by only John Lucas and Muggsy Bogues, most recently by Bogues in March of 1989. Jones' recent capability to facilitate the offense nearly mistake-free has not been rivaled in 35 years.
Player | Span | Assists | Turnovers |
---|---|---|---|
Tyus Jones | 02/12 to 02/27/2024 | 79 | 8 |
Muggsy Bogues | 03/19 to 03/30/1989 | 82 | 6 |
Muggsy Bogues | 03/17 to 03/27/1989 | 79 | 5 |
John Lucas | 04/06 to 04/15/1984 | 80 | 8 |
What truly sets Jones' streak apart from those of Lucas and Bogues is Jones' ability not only to set the table for his teammates but also to pour in points of his own. Over the same six games, Jones is shooting 10-of-21 from beyond the arc, good for a 47.6 percent clip from long range. In NBA history, no other player has recorded at least 79 assists and 10 made three-pointers with no more than eight turnovers in six games.
On the year, Jones is leading the Wizards in assists per game and three-point percentage, two fields he ranks among the league's best in as well. As the Wizards hit the road for a three-game trip to the West Coast, Tyus will look to continue his efficient offensive output and hopefully put an end to Washington's 12-game losing streak.
