Ranking top 5 Wizards draft targets to be their franchise centerpiece
By Jack Simone
4. Matas Buzelis
This would be an extremely risky selection, as Matas Buzelis just wrapped up a relatively shaky season with the G League Ignite (at least in terms of his shooting stroke) that saw his draft stock go down a bit.
However, in theory, Buzelis has all the tools to be a star at the NBA level. The Washington Wizards would just have to bank on him figuring it out and reaching his full potential.
While his overall year wasn’t amazing, Buzelis still improved throughout his season with the Ignite. At his best, Buzelis can create his own shot, make plays for others, and defend at a solid enough level to get by.
Bringing in a guy with as much all-around talent as Buzelis is exactly what the Wizards should be looking to do in the draft. Their number-one priority should be to snag a guy capable of starring in Washington.
Buzelis is about to turn 20 and would be a high-upside swing for the Wizards, especially at pick two. But if they truly believe in his star potential and he pans out, it would be a genius selection.
With his intriguing mix of skills on both sides of the ball, Buzelis should be on Washington’s radar, even at pick two.
