3. Jonas Valanciunas

The Wizards signed JV to a three-year contract worth $30.2 million in free agency. It was surprising after there was rumored interest from the Lakers and other contenders. Washington needed a center. His ability to rebound, set screens, and finish inside should help their young talent grow. It was a bargain contract, but a 32-year-old center on a rebuilding team will draw trade rumors.

There are already rumblings about Valanciunas, but he cannot be moved until Dec. 15. Do not be surprised to see the Wizards find a taker just before the deadline. It will give Valanciunas time to mentor and help their youngsters before Washington gets more draft capital to build out their young core.

Valanciunas does not protect the rim and several teams are set at center. The Wizards would be wise to wait for a need to arise elsewhere before trading JV. It should allow the franchise to maximize his value.

There should be zero rush. The Washington Wizards signed a starting center for less than the mid-level exception. His contract is an absolute steal and will only improve as the salary cap rises. There will certainly be rumors, but Michael Winger and the front office can afford to wait for the right package.
