5 Teams that could steal Tyus Jones from Wizards in free agency
By Jack Simone
NBA free agency has been going on for a few days now, and the Washington Wizards got active. They brought in big man Jonas Valanciunas, but they still haven’t re-signed Tyus Jones.
Jones played a big role for Washington last year. He’s the definition of a dependable point guard, and he would be a big help for Washington’s young core, giving them some structure on offense.
However, because of how impactful he is, other teams could be clamoring for Jones, and there have been rumblings that a potential sign-and-trade could be on the table.
Here are five teams who could steal Jones from Washington in free agency.
1. Orlando Magic
With Jalen Suggs and Cole Anthony leading the way at the point guard position, the Orlando Magic could use another top-notch facilitator. That’s where Jones could come in.
Bringing in a playmaker like Jones would give them a nice boost off the bench. He would be able to keep the offense organized, which would be especially useful come playoff time.
2. Philadelphia 76ers
After re-signing Tyrese Maxey to a massive extension, the Philadelphia 76ers will undoubtedly be on the hunt for back-up point guard minutes, and Jones could be their answer.
If Jones is willing to accept a back-up role, then he would slot into the minutes that Philadelphia lost with De’Anthony Melton departing for the Golden State Warriors.
3. Minnesota Timberwolves
Jones should be looking for more than a minimum contract, but if it comes down to the end of free agency and he still doesn’t have a deal, the Minnesota Timberwolves would be a great landing spot.
Minnesota just lost Monte Morris in free agency, and Mike Conley is only getting older. Bringing Jones into the fold would help them right away and could give them a longer-term answer at the one alongside rookie Rob Dillingham.
4. Los Angeles Lakers
Through the first few days of free agency, the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t done anything. Adding Jones to the mix would give them a great boost at the point guard position.
D’Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent are fine players, but Jones would give the Lakers a real facilitator to help run their offense, especially when LeBron James is out of the game.
5. Miami Heat
Getting a pass-first-esque point guard would be great for the Miami Heat, and Jones would fit in nicely with the rest of their core. He would be a great bench piece or even a starter in Miami.
Plus, his three-point shooting would mean he could share the floor with Tyler Herro or any of the other guards the Heat like to trot out in their rotation.
