It's been quite awhile since the Washington Wizards have had a superstar duo to build around, which is exactly why the blockbuster trades for Trae Young and Anthony Davis ahead of the NBA trade deadline added a new sense of urgency to the team's front office.
Landing both Young and Davis was originally viewed as a pair of bold swings that could help the team's young core take the leap to the next step at a relatively cheap price considering the discounted packages it to to acquire both playmakers.
However, that discounted price will quickly turn into a steep price this offseason, especially if the rumors about a potential extension for both players comes into fruition.
For Young, the situation is a bit different considering his age and the team's massive hole in the backcourt for an adequate playmaker.
As for Davis though, a long-term extension could be the massive mistake that comes back to bite the Wizards in both the short-term and long-term, according to NBA mind Sam Vecenie.
Sam Vecenie warns an Anthony Davis extension would be a hige mistake
In a recent episode of the Game Theory Podcast, Vecenie made his thoughts crystal clear about a potential Wizards extension for both Young and Davis.
When discussing the team's move to extend Davis, Vecenie did his best to extend warning signs to Washington:
"The AD things is the one that's really interesting to me because he does have like the extra year and I would imagine he wants an extension because like this is probably his last chance at a real extension," Vecenie said. "They should not do that. Like there's just no reason or answer to do that in my opinion right now given his injury history."
Obviously, that may not be the news fans want to hear, but it's the harsh reality the team should come to terms with before they put themselves in a bad situation.
AD's injury history is a concern
Inking Davis to a long-term deal would be a massive decision for Washington, and if he could stay healthy throughout the entirety of the deal, the narrative would drastically change.
However, looking at his age and injury history, the overwhelming reality is that the likelihood of the big man staying healthy is low.
That said, Washington tying themselves to the Kentucky product on a lucrative contract is a nightmare waiting to happen for the Wizards.
