The Washington Wizards have to extend Anthony Davis after giving Trae Young a massive four-year, $212 million extension this summer. They traded for the two stars in hopes of exiting their rebuild. Washington got the number one overall pick in the draft and is ready to contend. The only way to keep AD happy in the nation’s capital is to extend him before the start of the regular season.

Davis is set to make $58.4 million in the final guaranteed season on his contract. He has a $62.7 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign. The 33-year-old is represented by Rich Paul and is looking for a massive payday. Washington has no choice but to reward Davis after giving Young significantly more than anyone expected.

There were trade rumors to start the offseason, but AD is fully bought in. He appeared with his teammates at summer league and is already drawing praise from Washington's general manager. The Wizards have to get a new contract done and see what this roster can do.

Wizards clearly have to extend Anthony Davis after paying Trae Young

Davis is a superstar capable of dominating on both ends of the floor. He didn’t play for the Wizards after the trade, but the 33-year-old averaged 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.7 blocks in 31.3 minutes per game for the Mavericks. Washington bought low as Dallas looked to scrub their hands of the key piece from the disastrous Luka Doncic trade. It was a wise bit of business, but the Mavericks sold low for a reason.

They knew this extension was coming and didn’t want to pair AD with Cooper Flagg long-term. The Wizards clearly didn’t have those qualms. Now, it is time to show faith in Davis.

Will Dawkins had this to say about the ten-time All-Star during a recent interview.

“He wants to be in DC, and we're going to keep him there. I think the important thing for us is just building on the summer and making sure we are ready to go at the beginning of the year. He was out here with all of our guys. We had every single one of our team members here for game one. We had all 17 guys on the roster here, and he was a big part of what we had going on.”

It is fair to question the fit next to AJ Dybantsa and how this roster will mix developing their youth with maximizing AD and Young. Fans should wonder, but the Wizards built this roster. They clearly believe it can take a step forward. Now is the time to prove that.

The front office destroyed their leverage in the Davis negotiations by giving Trae Young a massive contract. AD becomes extension eligible on August 6. Rich Paul and Davis will want a similar deal. The big man is still elite when he plays and a guaranteed Hall of Famer. The injuries are a real concern, but it doesn’t make sense to buy low if the franchise isn’t willing to keep him for more than one season.

The Washington Wizards have to extend Anthony Davis after giving Trae Young a massive contract. They don’t want a disgruntled superstar in their young locker room. They should pay Davis in August and see what this team can do. The Wizards will be exciting when healthy. Let’s hope they can keep Davis on the floor more than Dallas could. If not, things could end in disaster.
