Cam Whitmore's addition to the Washington Wizards may be one of the most slept on moves not only for the team, but across the league this offseason.
The former first-round pick's talent speaks for itself and with an increased role waiting on him, he could be poised for a huge season courtesy of the change of scenery.
And that's not even factoring in how well his style of play compliments how head coach Brian Keefe wants his young Wizards to compete this season.
Between Whitmore and the additions of Tre Johnson and CJ McCollum, Washington's revemaped roster gives the Wizards everything they need to completely alter their style of play this coming season.
However, all the reasons listed above aren't even what makes the Whitmore addition so good for the Wizards.
Thankfully, general manager Will Dawkins shared exactly what the addition of the forward offers Washington:
“He’s [Whitmore] a kid that knows what DC basketball is about," Dawkins said. "He’s proud to be back here and help define what Wizards basketball will be known for going forward”
Being a Maryland native, Whitmore's tied to the Washington Wizards run deeper than what people may realize.
As a kid, nearly every young player dreams about the opportunity to play for their hometown team and only a small percentage of athletes get to turn that dream into reality.
Whitmore's first stop in Houston may not have gone to plan, but that doesn't mean that his fit with the Wizards will carry the similar script.
Dawkins made it clear that the Wizards culture is changing and that this season, nothing will be given.
The Villanova product will have to earn his role on the Wizards and while he doesn't know exactly when that'll be, Dawkins has confidence that the versatile forward will be a big-time player for Washington this season and for years to come.
At the end of the day, Whitmore will be the deciding factor on how successful his stint with the Wizards is, but considering he's headed back home with a second chance to prove that he has the talent to be a cornerstone player after all, odds seem to be in his favor.
Looking at the belief that Dawkins has in the Whitmore addition, it's clear the front offiice and coaching staff have high hopes for what the former lottery projection can develip into with an increased role.
Only time will tell, but early indications suggests that the Wizards mayt have gotten a steal.
