The Washington Wizards have acquired star guard Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks in a blockbuster trade.

Washington lands the former All-Star in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert in a move that gives the Wizards the answer at the point guard position the team has desperately been searching for.

After acquiring McCollum this offseason to serve as a mentor for the team's young core, the Wizards front office quickly made it a point to offload the veteran's expiring contract as the center point of a deal when it became evident that Young was available on the trade market.

Obviously, landing Young comes with risks considering his shortcomings on the defensive end quite literally go against everything the team has attempted to build in D.C., but at the end of the day, landing a guard of his level for an expiring contract and a role player in Kispert is about as big of a win as the Wizards could have gotten given the circumstances.

Young will play a major role in the development of big man Alex Sarr, which is a major reason why the Wizards were motivated to make a deal happen sooner rather than later.

However, Young's impact on Sarr won't be the only impact he brings to the Wizards with a trickle down effect set to take place.

Trae Young's impact could make or break what the Wizards built

There's no doubt that Young's addition will be vital for Sarr's development, as an elite passing guard could be what elevates the French product to the next level that allows for him to be Washington's cornerstone.

At the same time, Young's arrival will take the ball out of several other young prospects' hands on offense, with the likes of Kyshawn George and Bub Carrington specifically coming to mind.

Considering the Wizards urgency to get a deal done, it's clear that Young is set to command the offense for head coach Brian Keefe,

As a result, it takes away developmental opportunities for talented players like George and Carrington who thrive with the ball in their hands.

That alone is major reason why several people were timid about the possibility of Young joining this Wizards team; in addition to the fact that his defensive lapses are quite literally the opposite of the skillsets Washington's front office has seemingly aimed to build their roster around since the rebuild began.

Then there's also the question if Young truly wants to be in Washington, or were the Wizards just his best chance to ink a long-term extension?

Regardless, Young is the newest Wizard after the two teams agreed on the first major trade of the regular season.
