According to Libaan Osman of the Toronto Star, Washington Wizards wing Kyshawn George is joining the Canadian national team for the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup, fulfilling his long-time wish. It was just a few months back that George stated his desire to play for Team Canada, and now, he’ll have his first chance to do so at just 21 years old.
Canada has a stacked roster, and they proved their abilities at the Olympics last summer, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dillon Brooks, and others. However, George seems more than ready to contribute, as his three-point shooting and shot creation will fit in nicely alongside the rest of Canada’s lineup.
And they could have a real chance at victory.
How can Kyshawn George help Canada?
George is fresh off an extremely impressive Summer League showing that saw him display his growth as a creator, primed to contribute for the Wizards next season.
In his two appearances (31.5 MPG) before being shut down in Vegas, George averaged 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 4.0 steals while shooting 41.2% from the field and 23.5% from deep.
Though his efficiency was less than ideal, the talent was evident. George looked extremely comfortable in all facets of the game, including with the ball in his hands.
Osman even noted that George is expected to be one of the stars of Canada’s team this summer as they compete in the FIBA AmeriCup:
“Washington Wizards forward Kyshawn George will be suiting up for Canada Basketball at the FIBA AmeriCup in August, I’m told,” Osman wrote. “He’s expected to have a featured role.”
No official roster has been revealed yet, but it seems unlikely that the likes of Gilgeous-Alexander, Brooks, Andrew Nembhard, and the rest of the Olympic stars will be playing this summer.
That leaves plenty of minutes for George, who could use more time to develop as a ball handler and offensive initiator as he gets ready for next season in Washington.
While it may not be on the stage that George hopes to play on eventually, getting his feet wet with Team Canada will surely be a nice feeling for the youngster.
As for Wizards fans, this will provide a nice summer viewing activity, as George’s skills will be on full display throughout the tournament (and in a role he may not even have the chance to play in Washington).
Keep an eye on George in the red and white this summer.
