The Washington Wizards have had quite the busy offseason looking at the team's flurry of moves over the last couple of months.
General manager Will Dawkins nailed the NBA Draft, pulled the trigger on trades he thought would improve his roster and re-signed a few familiar faces in free agency.
However, what the Wizards' leader has positioned the Wizards to do moving forward may be the one thing that's flying under the radar.
Wizards may be poised to for a splash next offseason
As mentioned above, Washington has made a flurry of moves this offseason that have not only landed several high-upside players and a key veteran addition in CJ McCollum, but also created financial flexibility that has put the Wizards in position for a potentially huge offseason this time next year.
The Wizards aren't typically known to be an attractive destination in free agency. Looking back at the days when John Wall and Bradley Beal were in their prime, it proved tough enough to convince free agents to sign in Washington then, let alone now when the Wizards are firmly in the midst of a rebuilding stage.
Washington isn't looked at as a winning franchise and without a cornerstone in place, the lack of being a big market and not having a top head coach makes it a bit hard for the front office to pitch the idea of suiting up in the DMV to free agents.
However, that could change soon.
As we all know, money talks, especially in professional sports.
Looking at the cap space the Wizards are set to have at their disposal next offseason, Washington could look to get aggressive and potentially make it financially worth while for a marquee name to rethink the possibility of playing for the Wizards.
Especially if Brian Keefe's squad can take another step this season and showcase the abundance of young talent already on the roster.
Whether it be through free agency or on the trade market, the Wizards have the ammunition to become buyers next offseason, similarly to the Houston Rockets a few offseasons ago when Ime Udoka signed on to be the organizations' new head coach.
Considering the Rockets now find themselves contending at the top of the Western Conference, it could be a strategy the Wizards seriously consider.
The possibility of the Wizards putting together a masterclass of an offseason next year is very much in the cards and should be something to keep an eye on as the regular season progresses.
