The Washington Wizards' fate in the 2026 NBA Draft has officially been decided after Sunday's NBA Draft Lottery.
Washington will be selecting at No. 1 overall for the first time since 2010, and with former top pick John Wall representing the organization, it seems as if the franchise legend brought the team the good luck that general manager Will Dawkins was banking on ahead of the pivotal offseason.
The Wizards entered the lottery tied for the highest chance of earning the top selection, but after years of bad luck, all indications suggested this could be yet another offseason in which the fanbase saw their hopes and dreams come crashing down.
Alas, Washington finally got some good luck on their side. After having the chips fall in their favor for the first time in a long time, the Wizards seemingly have won the AJ Dybantsa sweepstakes and have the perfect opportunity to not only land a blue-chip prospect to add to their frontcourt, but they land an official cornerstone prospect to lead them moving forward.
Wizards AJ Dybantsa dreams finally a reality
There's no doubt that there are several talented prospects for Washington to choose from atop the NBA Draft, but all expectations are that the Wizards will likely lean into selecting the BYU standout.
After a dominant season during his lone year at BYU, the versatile forward has every ounce of talent needed to be a franchise player, and for a team like the Wizards, he's the exact type of prospect they have needed for quite some time.
Beyond what the impact Dybantsa will have for the Wizards on the court, the wing's presence alone may have just secured a long-term commitment from big man Anthony Davis, who seemed to have his foot out the door over the last couple of months.
Washington's offseason was just flipped upside down
The Wizards had high hopes for the offseason, but with their reputation for bad luck, it's safe to say that both the front office and the fanbase moved forward with cautious optimism.
Now, though, Washington can comfortably look ahead to the draft with reason to believe that not only are their rough days behind them, but they could officially be one of the most attractive destinations moving forward.
With Dybantsa on the roster, not only will the Wizards have the chance to keep AD around, but they'll become a team that many players around the league could look at and want to be a part of, and that alone will be unfamiliar territory for an organization that's been stuck in the constant cycle of mediocrity for years.
