Holding a league-worst 50-196 record over the past three seasons didn’t give Wizards fans much to cheer about.
In fact, during that period, Capital One Arena was often used to see the opposing team’s stars more than the Wizards, as they almost certainly dropped another game in what was a long, miserable process for a city that holds basketball in such high regard.
Well, on Wednesday against the visiting Milwaukee Bucks, DC’s faithful were able to feel, cheer, boo, and express excitement that had been asked to be put on hold for a while but was awakened to open the 2026-27 NBA season.
Wizards fans were engaged and rooting for their team the entire night
From the opening tip, the energy in the air made it palpable that this roster built by General Manager Will Dawkins was one that D.C. believed in.
Aside from the team as a whole, arguably the biggest benefactor of the raucous crowd Wednesday night was ten-time All-Star Anthony Davis. His 34 points and 12 rebounds caused MVP chants in the arena. They didn't happen just once, but three times throughout his debut as a Wizard.
Following the win “The Brow” said of the crowd: “The crowd was great, they were into it. Got us over the hump.”, while having the quote of the night later on saying: “Even when I came last year. The very first home game, it was like “Dress Like a Seat Night” in here.”
Further proving that the players notice a difference in enthusiasm and anticipation for the newest iteration of the Washington Wizards.
Wizards fans created a hostile environment for the opposing team as well
Whether it be Madison Square Garden, where the New York Knicks play, TD Garden, the home of the Boston Celtics, or the Paycom Center that house the Oklahoma City Thunder, the best home courts in the NBA are not only loud for their team, but make sure to be vocal in their disdain for the opponents. That was abundant tonight at Capital One Arena.
Making sure to boo former Wizard Kyle Kuzma from player introductions, leading into every time he touched the ball, and erupting in celebration as he missed seven of his nine shot attempts in the game, you heard Wizards fans making it known that it won’t be an easy task coming into their arena at all this season. Fans have a team they can buy into that produces wins, or at least entertaining basketball, on most nights.
And if the first game is any way to judge how the full season will go, Wizards fans will be the sixth man that the team needs out there on the floor.
