The Washington Wizards have long dreamed about the opportunity to have superstar forward Kevin Durant lace up for his hometown team.

Looking back at years past, it was clear that the Wizards never truly had a squad that would entice the former MVP to bring his talents back to the nation's capital.

Their best chance came in 2015 when John Wall and Bradley Beal made their bid to form a superstar trio with Durant during NBA Free Agency, but ultimately, the opportunity to contend for a championship alongside Stephen Curry in Golden State was too good to pass up.

Fast forward to now, though, the Wizards' new-look roster offers enough encouragement where making a swing for Durant this offseason is more feasible than maybe anyone realizes.

And following the latest report from The Ringer's Michael Pina, Washington may have their eyes on the Durant move the franchise has been waiting on.

Wizards could have interest in trading for Kevin Durant

In a recent update from Pina regarding the current state of the Houston Rockets, who find themselves down 3-1 to the Los Angeles Lakers 3-1, it was revealed that the team could be looking to turn Durant into a stepping stone this offseason.

"The Rockets thought that KD was their missing piece, and instead, there’s a chance they’ll turn him into a stepping stone this summer," Pina writes. "It turns out that your best player shouldn’t also be a mercenary."

The senior writer continues his report, suggesting that if Durant is moved on from, an abundance of teams would have a level of interest, including Durant's hometown team:

"But despite that, the Heat, Timberwolves, Blazers, Mavericks, Pistons, Knicks, Raptors, Hawks, Magic, Lakers, Nuggets, Hornets, Bulls, Wizards, Warriors, Pacers, Jazz, Sixers, Celtics, Cavaliers, Bucks, and Clippers would all have varying degrees of interest—pending how the rest of these playoffs go."

If Washington truly is interested, depending on the price, the possibility of assembling a superstar trio would immediately make the Wizards one of the most dangerous teams in the East.

A Wizards trio of Durant, Anthony Davis & Trae Young would be lethal

It's extremely hard for teams to assemble star talent in today's NBA, especially talent that complements one another.

For the Wizards, it's generally been hard to get star talent in the door until now.

A trio of Durant, Anthony Davis, and Trae Young, though, would be the rare case in which each playmaker's skillset would perfectly fit alongside the others.

Young isn't an extremely high-IQ facilitator with range, and Durant has the ability to run an offense with his elite shot-creating and next-level shotmaking ability.

As for Davis, he's arguably the most dominant big man in the league when healthy, and that, alongside Young and Washington's talented young core, would make the Wizards one of the most elite teams in the Eastern Conference, regardless of age.
