The Washington Wizards' rough season is approaching an end, and the team is one step closer to potentially putting together a dream offseason to cap off their rebuild with a top prospect in the 2026 NBA Draft.
There's no denying that the Wizards have battled through an abundance of ups and downs this season, especially when considering the injury luck and surplus of losses the organization has gone through up to this point.
And while the season has surely been a roller coaster ride for the fanbase, the opportunity to see a wave of young talent emerge in the DMV has been the exact glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel that the team's supporters needed to see.
Obviously, next season can't get here soon enough, with the new superstar duo of Trae Young and Anthony Davis expected to lead the young squad back into contention in the Eastern Conference.
However, while fans are eagerly looking forward to what's to come, it may be time to caution a crossroad that could be on the horizon, especially after the emergence of Will Riley in light of Kyshawn George's absence.
Wizards could be forced to choose between Riley and George eventually
Kyshawn George's emergence this season was one of the most exciting stories for the Wizards, with the second-year man forward showcasing just how impactful he can be in Washington moving forward.
The former first-round pick finished his sophomore campaign averaging 14.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists, while shooting 43.8% from field goal range and 38.1% from beyond the arc.
George showcased nearly everything the Wizards front office and coaching staff could have hoped for during his 48 games this season, but his breakout season came to an abrupt end after being sidelined with a UCL injury that eventually ruled him out for the season.
The Miami product's absence opened a window for rookie wing Will Riley to see extended minutes, in which he's emerged as a major story down the stretch for Washington.
Riley, a reigning first-round pick, has become one of the biggest bright spots in D.C. not only this season, but for the future, and with back-to-back 30-point games, it's only a matter of time before Washington realizes they have a future star on their hands.
And if that truly is the case, Washington may soon reach the point where the tough decision to decide between which wing they'll build around has to be made.
Washington will have a hard time keeping both
In a perfect world, Washington could keep both George and Riley to build around with the chance to have a dyamic wing duo to the likes of the Boston Celtics, who have built around Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.
However, the new CBA guidelines have made living in a perfect world nearly impossible, and with the Wizards expected to ink both Young and Davis to extensions this offseason, and the eventual payday for Alex Sarr, Washington will have to make tough decisions if they hope to toe the financial line that could limit them moving forward.
If that is the case, the Wizards may be forced to deal with the tough decision between which player fits the best for their plans, especially if they hope to keep Tre Johnson and whatever prospect the team lands this offseason for the long-haul too.
