The Washington Wizards haven't been shy over the last couple of years when it comes to make trades.
Washington finally kicked off their long overdue rebuild when the team traded away Bradley Beal to the Phoenix Suns and Kristaps Porzingis to the Boston Celtics in 2023.
Not long after, the team continued to reset their future building blocks by moving on from former lottery pick Deni Avdija in a draft night deal that landed them Malcolm Brogdon in return last offseason. In addition to the move to land Brogdon, Washington signed big man Jonas Valanciunas in free agency with the plan to deal him ahead of this year's NBA trade deadline, which they did.
The team has moved on from names such as Beal, Porzingis, Valanciunas, Kyle Kuzma, Patrick Baldwin, Jared Butler and Johnny Davis in recent years as they remain one of the more active teams in the trade market.
In turn, the Wizards head into the offseason with decisions to make on multiple veteran players who clearly don't fit the timeline of their rebuild like Khris Middleton, Marcus Smart, Richaun Holmes, and even possibly even Jordan Poole.
And considering the latest rumors about the Wizards future plans, fans should prepare for Washington to have another action packed offseason, and not just because they lead the race for the No. 1 overall pick.
Wizards expected to have busy offseason
The Wizards have plenty of assets at their disposal that will interest playoff contending teams as they look to bolster their rosters to make a run in 2026. Washington has no long-term use for these veteran players, which will put them in position to be more than willing to field calls from contending teams who can offer draft capital or even young players that could be a fit in the team's future plans.
Middleton is widely expected to opt-in to his $33.35 million player option, Smart is on a $21.59 million expiring contract and Holmes is entering the final season of his $13.28 million contract. All that to say the Wizards will be in an interesting position as they navigate how to manage and/or offload the veterans' contracts if they indeed do choose to move on from them.
And that's not even mentioning how the team could pivot to cash in on Jordan Poole's improved play this season.
As the future in Washington pends many decisions, the one thing that is for certain is the Wizards have a busy offseason ahead of them that could immediately alter their rebuilding plans.
