Big man Walt Bellamy was the first overall pick in the 1961 NBA Draft by the Chicago Packers. He was a holdover when the team moved to Baltimore and became the Bullets for the 1963-64 season.

He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award after averaging 31.6 points and 19.0 rebounds on 51.9 percent shooting from the field. Along with Rookie of the Year, Bellamy also led the NBA in field goal percentage the same year.

Bellamy was a four-time All-Star while he was a member of the organization from 1962-1965. In the 1965 NBA Playoffs, he averaged 20.9 points, 15.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists in leading the Bullets to the Western Division Finals.

He averaged 23.9 points and 14.4 rebounds in 327 games before being traded to the New York Knicks for Jim BarnesJohnny Egan and Johnny Green on Nov. 2, 1965.

He played for the Knicks from 1965 until Dec. 19, 1968, when he was traded to the Detroit Pistons along with Howard Komives for Dave DeBusschere. He spent 109 games with the Pistons before being traded again to the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 1, 1970.

Bellamy’s final stop as an NBA player came with the New Orleans Jazz. He was waived by the team on Oct. 18, 1974, but that wasn’t the last NBA fans would hear of Bellamy.

He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 and still holds the record for most regular season games played with 88. He was also a member of the US Olympics team that won the gold medal in 1960.
