Point guard Kevin Porter took the NBA by storm as the original floor general for the Bullets. He was drafted out of Saint Francis University (PA) where he put up 23.8 points per game in 72 career games. The Bullets selected him with the ninth pick in the third round of the 1972 NBA Draft as the 39th overall pick.

Shooting wasn’t the key to his success so much as his passing ability was. The 6-foot floor general found his niche that way as he led the NBA in assists per game (8.0) during the 1974-75 season. He led the league in assists and assists per game four times during his career, earning the league’s assist champion award as a result with two different teams.

After three seasons with the Washington organization, Porter made two more stops in his NBA career. He played 74 games with the New Jersey Nets and 190 games for the Detroit Pistons. As a member of the Pistons, Porter became the first player to record over 1,000 assists in a single season in 1978-79. He also led the league in assists (1,099) and assists per game (13.4) that same year.

Porter played with the Bullets from 1979-83, rejoining his former squad after the 1978-79 season. He played his last contest as a member of the Bullets on Jan. 14, 1983. Currently, he ranks fifth all-time in franchise history in assists per game (6.6) and fourth all-time in total assists (2,593).
