Washington Wizards: Top 5 Moments of the Decade
By Jack Skolnik
#3: (2010/2012) The Wizards draft John Wall and Bradley Beal
The number 3 moment had to be listed in two parts! As the two guys who ended up being the franchise stars, we had to take a look back at what started it all. In 2010 after winning the #1 pick in the draft, the Wizards ended up selecting Kentucky Point Guard, John Wall.
Wall was a 6’4 guard, known for his blazing speed and true point guard qualities while at Kentucky. He ended up being the next franchise star and made the most of his opportunities. Wall quickly showed that he could be the new face of the Wizards as he provided a grit and grind mentality over his first few seasons, even though they didn’t win much.
This ended up leading the Wiz to their next star, Bradley Beal, whom they drafted with the #3 overall pick in 2012. A sharpshooter out of the University of Florida, Beal was a good fit next Wall as a backcourt duo that became notorious around the league.
In just their second season together in 2013-2014, Wall and Beal led the Wizards back to the playoffs for the first time since 2008. As the #5 seed in the East the Wizards upset the Chicago Bulls, taking them down in five games. They went on to lose in the second round to Paul George and the Indiana Pacers in six games, however it was a positive start to the Wall/Beal era.
The duo went on to lead the Wizards to the playoffs in three of their next four seasons. Since being drafted both players have been considered top guards in the league, John as a 5x All-Star and 1x All-NBA, Brad as a 2x All-Star (about to be 3x… be sure to #VoteBeal before the end of the day!).
All of the success that the Wiz have had over the past decade can all be attributed to these two and everything they have done. In a star driven league, regardless of the outcome, the Wizards and their fans have been lucky to have John and Brad.
