Head Coach

Randy Wittman (2011-2016)

Randy Wittman was NOT your X’s and O’s coach. He wasn’t going to draw up some fantastic play or even play a rotation that made much sense. What Randy Wittman did for the Wizards was instill a true atmosphere of accountability and defensive tenacity that would extend beyond his tenure (and could probably be used a bit right now).

Wittman had his faults, including trying to get Kevin Love to stop shooting 3’s and making some truly hilarious faces on the sidelines, but he holds a special place in Washington Wizards history.

No offense to current coach Scott Brooks, but Wittman took the franchise from easily its lowest point in history and created a playoff contender on a team that had Gary Neal, Ramon SessionsJared Dudley and Garrett Temple each contribute 20 or more minutes per game.

Inexplicably, Randy Wittman was fired following the 2015-16 season, which probably was just the result of being a scape goat for failing General Manager Ernie Grunfeld. Scott Brooks has arguably done less with a better roster, but the jury is still out.

If not for Randy Wittman, there’s no telling where the Wizards would be today, or how the John Wall Era would have begun.
