Where’s the upside with Corey Kispert?

The Washington Wizards, for maybe the first time since they were the Bullets, suddenly have some depth. While you can never go wrong with too much shooting, does adding another guy to the mix really make sense? Particularly when intriguing developmental projects such as Alpheren Sengun (18 years old), Jaden Springer (18), and Usman Garuba (19) were still on the board? As a 22-year-old senior, Corey Kispert is close to a finished product. If he can’t make a difference right away, then Washington may really rue the pick.

Despite all of the brilliance displayed by Tommy Sheppard and the front office this offseason, the franchise is still in a precarious situation. New point guard Spencer Dinwiddie is a big-time injury risk. Wes Unseld Jr. is unproven. The jury is still out on Rui Hachimura and Deni Avdija. The East is better. Beal’s extension decision looms…

To me, the Corey Kispert selection reeked of the “safe” variety, which is disappointing. Now let’s see how he performs in Summer League and the regular season.
