The news of Brooklyn Nets’ point guard, Kyrie Irving requesting a trade has made the NBA world turn upside down. The Nets currently sit in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. With the Washington Wizards sitting in ninth, which is good enough to contend for a play-in spot., it may be a good idea to put the chips in and make a package to bring the All-Star point guard to the District.

Kyrie Irving, who has been on a tear all season, is averaging 27.1 points per game, which is 11th in the entire league. Trading for a ball dominant point guard like Irving would be ideal for the Wizards since they have had significant success with John Wall and Russell Westbrook at the one. It would also take the pressure off Bradley Beal to control the majority of the offensive load. Irving’s wizardry on the basketball court can give this team the spark they been lacking for years. He is a knockdown shooter, great playmaker, has the clutch gene, and also has the championship pedigree.

What would be the best-case scenario for a Wizards trade involving Kyrie Irving?

The highest value trade for the Wizards would be a package deal of Will Barton, Monte Morris, Delon Wright, Corey Kispert, and a sizable amount first round picks for Kyrie Irving. Barton, who is from the DMV area, has recently been open to the possibility of playing elsewhere since he has been regulated to the bench since joining Washington. The Wizards will give up a lot, but when the opportunity to get a superstar presents itself, they should jump on it.

Kyrie’s teammate, Kevin Durant also asked for a trade before the season started but decided to retract his request. With Irving now requesting a trade, KD may decide to bring back his request to leave Brooklyn. The Nets would possibly entertain a trade with Washington if the picks were appealing for them as they can start building towards a future without their superstars. The Nets can start building around their young center, Nic Claxton. This can also clear space to play their other young talent such as Cam Thomas and Day’Ron Sharpe. Thomas and Sharpe are not full-time rotation players but when they get extended time, they produce pretty well. This will also give the Nets an opportunity to trade their vets for more picks and a younger core. This may cause them to lose plenty of games, but they can tank for the next few years.

A starting lineup of Kyrie Irving, Bradley Beal, Kyle Kuzma, Daniel Gafford, and Kristaps Porziņģis could make some noise in the playoffs if they can gain chemistry quickly. The backup point guard duties can go to newly acquired guard, Kendrick Nunn who was traded for Rui Hachimura on January 23.

As talented Kyrie Irving can be on the court, he does a lot of great things off the court. He can be a great addition to the DMV community with activist work and thoughts on social justice issues.
