Number one: Wes Unseld

Wizards Stats: 10.8 points, 14 rebounds, 3.9 assists. Five-Time All-Star. 1974-75 Rebound Champ. 1968-69 Rookie of the Year, All-Rookie First Team, All-NBA First Team, MVP (yes all in the same year!)1978 NBA champion. NBA 50th & 75th Anniversary Team. 1978 Finals MVP.

The Wide U. The Oak Tree. Who else would be first on this list? None other than Wes Unseld. The man won the Most Valuable Player and the Rookie of the Year in the same season. Only he and Wilt Chamberlain were able to accomplish this feat. If you’re in the same conversation as Wilt, you are doing something spectacular. Despite only being 6-foot-7 inch, Unseld was one of the greatest rebounders of all-time. On top of this, his outlet passes were legendary. His combination of great rebounding and outlet passes would help his team get out on the fast break. He took his team to four finals and finally got the elusive goal in 1978, capturing Finals MVP along the way.

When Unseld retired, he was given an executive position with the franchise in 1981. He served as the vice president for a while then became the team’s head coach. He resigned as the coach following the 1993-’94 season with a record of 202-345.

Wes Unseld sits first in games played (984), minutes played (35,832) and total rebounds (13,769).  He’s top 10 in a lot of other categories as well. Wes’ #41 is up in the rafters as well and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988 as a player. He is the undisputed greatest player in franchise history! Unseld unfortunately passed in 2020 but his legacy lives on, as his son Wes Unseld Jr coaches the team now.
