The 10 worst free agents in Washington Wizards history
Davis Bertans made a name for himself with his sharpshooting but could provide little else for a team.
While he put the league on notice after he hit 42.4% of his 8.7 three-point attempts per game in in the 2019-20 season, after getting a huge pay day in the offseason, he has never been even close to hitting that mark again.
After his explosive season from beyond the arc, the Washington Wizards inked Bertans for a five-year $80 million contract. He is making $15-16 million every year of that contract.
The reason this contract lands as high as it does is the fact that if he wasn’t being paid as much as he is on a team trying to “play winning basketball[,]” he would likely no longer be in the NBA, and if he were, it would not be on anything more than a minimum contract.
While he may be an elite scorer from beyond the arc, he is incapable of doing anything else on the basketball court. He has a weak handle, doesn’t play good defense at all, and isn’t very good around the rim either.
That elite shooting is the only thing that made him a valuable player to any team. The only problem for him was the fact that in his third season with the Wizards he only hit 31.9% of his three-point attempts.
This led to him being involved in the Kristaps Porzingis trade as salary filler and has yet to do any better than 38.1% from three on 2.9 attempts per game. He still has two more years on his contract after this season as well.
This is clearly the worst contract in team history as he produced nothing for the team after receiving the pay day years after teams adjusted to the increased salary cap introduced in 2016.
While a vast majority of their free agency record falls under the ‘mediocre’ category, the Washington Wizards do in fact have their fair share of bad contracts. To make things worse, it’s entirely possible that they have two more bad ones pile up this offseason if Kyle Kuzma or Kristaps Porzingis don’t pan out.
