Seemingly, since he arrived as a superstar in the league 15+ years ago, Kevin Durant has been the desire for many Wizards fans hoping for relevancy.
With his 7ft wiry frame, along with his once-in-a-generation ability to handle the ball, being an excellent catch and shoot player as well as off the dribble, Wizards fans looked at the Suitland, Maryland product as being the great hope in taking them from worst to first.
To the dismay of many, though, Durant at every turn made it known he had no interest in pulling a LeBron James move and returning home. Given how much of an ageless wonder the now 37-year-old Durant is, there still was a sliver of hope that after the failed stops in Brooklyn, Phoenix, and the rocky start to his tenure in Houston, KD would finally come home.
With the selection of the standout BYU product AJ Dybantsa, No.1 overall in Tuesday’s NBA Draft, though, the Wizards can finally shift their hopes for contention away from someone who doesn’t want to be a Wizard into an exciting young player who is gonna revel in all that comes with playing for the team.
The Wizards finally have a player with superstar potential to build around
A large reason why the Wizards faithful couldn’t get over dreams of KD returning home is because of the impatience in not being able to land that young superstar that so many other teams found.
While teams like the Pistons found Cade Cunningham, the Spurs picked Victor Wembanyama, and the Mavericks got Cooper Flagg, the Wizards were stuck with rosters full of cast-offs, and young players that, while good, did not have the caliber of being the face of a team that could be in the mix for an NBA Championship.
Dybantsa on day one becomes that for a Wizards franchise and fanbase that is in need of one.
“I’m an exciting player, so I can fill seats. Want the fans to come see me play,” said the newest Wizard on the Stephen A. Smith show on Monday, and the question is, when is the last time the Wizards have had a player you can honestly say that about?

The next phase of the process begins
Since John Wall’s final season as a Wizard in 2020, they couldn’t start the build to being a serious threat until they found that guy to build everything around.
AJ is that. Wizards fans and staff alike can rest knowing that they’re no longer in search of a Kevin Durant to come to town to save them.
19-year-old AJ Dybantsa, who has a 1st team All-NBA ceiling, is in the building. You have that player, now build around him properly and watch success come.
