The Washington Wizards have plenty of young talent on the roster and with several international prospects making up their youth movement, it offers fans plenty of different possibilities to watch their favorite players suit up this offseason.
Washington's young core started off the offseason prioritizing development by competing in the NBA Summer League.
At least most of the team's young players did, excluding the likes of Bilal Coulibaly and newly acquired Cam Whitmore.
Alex Sarr suited up in Summer League and in the few games he did play for the Wizards, the big man showed plenty of promise and flashes of growth that Washington's front office and fanbase could be excited about heading into next season.
As the offseason continued, news broke that Sarr would accompany Coulibaly to suit up for France's national team this offseason giving them the chance to further their development this offseason.
The idea sounded good, but the extra time playing against competitive competition increased the chance that the Wizards young duo could be dealt a setback such as an injury or lackluster play that could impact their confidence heading into next season.
Unfortunately, both scenarios deemed true with the recent updates from EuroBasket.
For starters, Sarr has been ruled out for the remainder of EuroBasket play after suffering a calf injury against Slovenia.
The 7-footer will be forced to take his time during this recovery process, especially with the growing concerns how how nagging a calf injury can be if mismanaged during recovery.
With the season looming, Sarr's availalibility seems up in the air with uncertainty surrounding the likelihood he's able to suit up during preseason activities.
As for Coulibaly, his recent play for France hasn't been what you would call spectacular.
Not only has the defensive-minded guard showed signs of struggles offensively, but after fouling out in a total of nine minutes on the court.
Coulibaly's potential is off the charts, but his aggressive playing style and lack of situational awareness to avoid committing foul after foul draws plenty of question marks around his play heading into year three.
All things considered, news could be worse for the Wizards and their fanbase, but it could also be better.
Fortunately, EuroBasket and the NBA are officiated differently and Sarr's calf has plenty of time to heal prior to the start of the season.
However, it's clear that the offseason could have gone better for the Wizards young French products.
