AJ Dybantsa still has a few weeks until he's officially part of the Washington Wizards organization, and that's assuming Will Dawkins proves the predraft speculation right and selects the BYU standout at No. 1.
If Dybantsa is the guy, there's no denying that he's being drafted to be the cornerstone of the Wizards' future, like most top picks are when they enter the league.
Nonetheless, just because he's the building block the Wizards would be planning to feature the rest of their rebuild around, doesn't mean they should throw everything they've already built out the window.
All that to say, the nonsense that former Wizards' legend Gilbert Arenas is putting in Dybantsa's ear feels like a comment from left field that's not needed.
Gilbert Arenas says Wizards should trade everybody if they draft Dybantsa
On a recent episode of Gil's Arena Show, Arenas sat down with projected top pick AJ Dybantsa, and among the several interesting comments the former Wizards' icon shared, he suggested that if the star forward lands in the DMV, Washington should trade everybody.
“The reason I say that is you are the number one pick, and you have the personality," Arenas said to Dybantsa. "You are a star, and since you are the star, I need you to take over instantly. So I don’t need any other ex-stars or anybody who wants to still be a star there. So I need full spotlight. I’m just saying I need full spotlight on you.”
Not Trae Young, not Anthony Davis, but everybody.
Dybantsa's confused reaction to Arenas' suggestion probably matched not only mine, but the rest of the fanbases too, when you hear that quote.
It's understandable for Arenas to suggest maybe moving on from AD, or even a young talent like Kyshawn George, who would directly compete for minutes (although Washington should NOT do that), but to say everybody is absolutely absurd.
Why would the Wizards essentially blow up everything they've built to establish one of the most intriguing young cores in the league, just to build around a new cornerstone?
Washington has no reason to do that. In fact, the selection of Dybantsa should be the lone reason why the Wizards have the confidence to build forward, not go backwards.
Dybantsa gives the WIzards a reason to believe their rebuild is over
President of Monumental Basketball Michael Winger suggested after the trade deadline that the Wizards were ready to exit the reconstruction phase of their rebuild.
That was before landing the No. 1 overall pick, and now that they officially have the chance to snag a legit cornerstone, why would they revert backwards in the stages of their long rebuild just to set themselves back even more?
It's not like the current talent on the roster doesn't fit alongside Dybantsa.
All that to say, Arenas' comments are wild, and it's the exact comments that shouldn't be fed to the projected top pick.
