The Washington Wizards are still fully committed to the rebuild following the acquisition of four-time All-Star Trae Young.

It appeared post trade that the lines were blurred in regards to the Wizards' vision following the urgency to land a premiere talent in Young when the opportunity presented itself.

Adding a star player at the caliber of Young, many wondered if Washington's front office eagerness to land a top player would potentially put a wrinkle in the team's rebuilding plans; more specifically the team's chances at landing a top pick this offseason.

With an abundance of elite prospects headlining the 2026 NBA Draft class and the Wizards holding the rights to a top-8 protected first-round pick, the arrival of Young struck fear into the harsh reality that Washington could have shot themselves in the foot in terms of their chances to land a top talent this offseason.

Especially following the team's recent stretch of wins that shifted their position in the NBA standings prior to the move.

Despite that, it became clear after the trade that Washington would adjust accordingly to avoid a disaster situation at the end of the season.

Part of those adjustments could be the exact reason why the Wizards aren't in any rush to have Young's Wizards debut any time soon.

At the same time, many people may wonder why the Wizards felt the need to make a blockbuster trade for Young just to let him stand on the sidelines?

Well, it's not everyday that the Wizards find themselves listed at the top of a list of preferred landing spots for a star player and the opportunity to pull the trigger on a trade was simply too good to pass up.

And according to NBA Insider Jake Fischer, that was the exact mindset of the Wizards' front office.

Jake Fischer reveals Wizards' Trae Young mindset

On a recent update for Bleacher Report, Fischer revealed his thoughts on the Young deal and simply shared why the opportunity to land a talent of Young's nature was too good to pass up.

"Trae Young is a four-time All-Star that the Wizards essentially got for an expiring contract and a sixth-man type of player in Corey Kispert," Fischer said.

"That's a very low cost of operating for the Wizards to bring in that type of talent, and with Trae Young being currently sidelined with a quad contusion, he had an MCL injury early in the year, by all accounts the Wizards are going to take their sweet sweet time in letting Trae Young come back from these injuries," Fischer continued.

So why trade for Young now? Simply because the Wizards landed a top talent at a position of need for an extremely discounted price while not feeling that his addition would cost them a top pick this offseason.

"There's not a lot of expectation that he'll play much this year, so to that regard, I don't think he'll be on the floor to the point where it's going to impact Washington's record all that consequentially," the NBA Insider added.

The opportunity to land Young was too good for the Wizards to pass up and now they have the chance to legitimately build something special in Washington this offseason with a proven answer at point guard.
