The Washington Wizards have picked Pittsburgh guard Carlton “Bub” Carrington with the No. 14 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and with the selection, they have gotten the steal of the draft.
Carrington has shot up draft boards in recent weeks as one of the youngest players on the board. His shot creation and ability to handle the ball have made him a favorite of scouts and draft experts. Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer compared him to a "Big Lou Williams."
Wizards picking Bub Carrington in 2024 NBA Draft solves need of having a future at the point guard position
An impressive mid-range scorer and playmaker as well, Carrington will fit in perfectly with what the Wizards are building because he solves a major need—a real future at the point guard position.
Despite his rough year, Jordan Poole is a fine player, but he’s probably not the Wizards’ point guard of the future. Carrington could be that in Washington.
Adding a super young player like Carrington to play alongside Bilal Coulibaly and No. 2 pick Alex Sarr will give Washington a much-needed spark on the offensive end.
Adding a super young player like Carrington to play alongside Bilal Coulibaly and No. 2 pick Alex Sarr will give Washington a much-needed spark on the offensive end.
Coulibaly and Sarr are going to cause major problems on the defensive side of the ball for any opponent that goes up against the Wizards. That’s why getting Carrington is so great for the Wizards.
He will be able to step in and get immediate reps at the point guard position for a Washington team that needs two things—someone to help organize the offense and a big boost in the shot-creation department.
Having Poole on the roster as well isn’t ideal for Carrington’s development, but the Wizards should prioritize their new young guard. They should be able to give him a ton of minutes to help him grow moving forward.
Neither Coulibaly nor Sarr is ready to be a top offensive option, and while Carrington is still a young prospect who needs time to develop, he has the outline of a player who can lead the way on that end in the future.
At nearly 6-foot-4, Carrington has some great size for the point guard position, too. While he may have a ton of development to do before getting to his full potential, he has all the physical and skill tools to get there.
Washington is a perfect landing spot for a guy like Carrington. If they play things right and give him the room he needs to improve and grow in the league, then this could end up being an absolute steal.
