Just terrible work.

For the past few years, the Washington Wizards have been one of the worst teams in the league. Well, for a minute there, they were consistently in the middle of the pack, but that didn’t result in any sort of playoff success.

Last summer, they decided to trade away Bradley BealW and Kristaps Porzingis, ushering in a new era of Wizards basketball and kickstarting a long-overdue rebuild.

That said, while they may not have been trying to rebuild as of late, they were still getting a ton of chances in the lottery, as they have only made the playoffs once since 2018.

Despite that, the Wizards have had relatively little draft success compared to some other teams around the league, and their embarrassing fumbles in the draft were unintentionally highlighted by Bleacher Report’s recent 5-Year NBA Re-Draft.

Wizards terrible draft history exposed in Bleacher Report's 5-Year NBA Re-Draft

The staff at Bleacher Report made a project in which they threw every player drafted in the last five years into a pool and gave every team in the league a first-round pick.

The draft order was decided by every team’s combined record over the course of the past five years, and the Wizards got the third pick. That means they have been the third-worst team in the NBA over the past five years, with the only two teams worse than them being the Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs.

But there’s one key difference between the Pistons, Spurs, and Wizards: The Pistons and Spurs both have players who were selected in the re-draft. The Wizards have none.

Spurs stars Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell were both selected, while Pistons star Cade Cunningham was also picked. Deni Avdija, who the Wizards just traded, wasn’t even picked.

In the past five years, the Wizards, despite being one of the worst teams in basketball, haven’t picked one of the top 30 players in the five collective drafts.

That is completely embarrassing and a reflection of how poorly the team has handled things.

Washington is undoubtedly hoping that guys like Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, and Bub Carrington can change their bad drafting history, but for now… yikes.
