The Washington Wizards have plans to extend Trae Young to a long-term contract extension this offseason and according to NBA insider Marc Stein, a three-year extension seems to be the most likely scenario.

“I’ve been repeatedly advised to expect Young and the Wizards to come to terms on a contract extension this summer that is widely projected to be a three-year deal,” Stein reported.

When Washington made the bold move to acquire the four-time All-Star, it becamse clear that the Wizards not only envisioned the former No. 5 overall pick as a much-needed answer to their glaring hole in the backcourt, but they viewed the star guard as an addition that could help them get to the next-level of their rebuild.

Trae Young will be apart of the Wizards long-term vision

Young's debut for the Wizards has yet to come and there's no clear answer exactly how his fit on the roster will look.

However, the Oklahoma product has proven to be one of the best facilitators in the league since his rookie season and his fit alongside superstar big man Anthony Davis only adds to the momentum the young core in D.C. has already established up to this point.

Beyond that, Stein's report of a Young extension seeming likely silences all outside noise that the guard could be a potential flight risk.

With Young set to assume the starting point guard role for the Wizards when he returns to full health, Washington's lineup next season will almost certainly make them one of the biggest sleepers in the league.

All that to say, the former Hawk has seemingly found a new home in the DMV and based on the way he's embraced the city since he's arrived, that doesn't come as a surprise.

Trae Young's debut still up in the air

Based on recent reports, it appeared that Young could be headed towards a debut sooner rather than later after being cleared to increase basketball activities.

In fact, the star guard has been seen pregame for the Wizards warming up, which typically would indicate a debut may be on the horizon.

According to Stein though, there's still a level of doubt that the playmaker's debut will come this season:

“Washington has maintained that Young is progressing toward making his Wizards debut at some point before the regular season ends, but skepticism persists in various corners of the league about whether it will actually happen this season,” Stein wrote.

Regardless of when that debut comes, it's clear that the Wizards' new backcourt star is here to stay and with an extension looming in the summer, he has the chance to put Washington back on the map.
