The Washington Wizards have done their part in regards to talent evaluation and doing what they can to give head coach Brian Keefe mulriple high-upside prospects to develop as the rebuild continues.
Bilal Coulibaly, Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington, Kyshawn George, AJ Johnson and even Cam Whitmore come to mind when thinking about the talent on Washington's roster.
However, the one player with arguably the most upside of any player on the Wizards is newly drafted Tre Johnson.
Washington landed Johnson with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, avoiding a near disaster after sliding out of the top five as a whole in the NBA Draft Lottery in May.
Nonetheless, missing out on Cooper Flagg and Dylan Harper may have let Washington to the perfect prospect, at least for them and the rebuild taking place in the DMV.
Johnson has everything a team could covet in regards to scoring potential and he showed that on a consistent basis this past year at Texas.
The explosive guard averaged 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a full-time starter as a freshman with the Longhorns last season.
In addition to his impressive stats, the 19-year-old only added to the confidence of scouts with efficient shooting splits of 42.7% from field goal range and 39.7% from beyond the arc.
Washington's newest guard can score at will, whether the ball is in his hands or he's working off the ball. Johnson's basketball IQ is high and the mixture of his talent make him a nightmare to defend.
Despite that, the one area of the game that could use improvement is his ability to facilitate and create opportunities for the players around him.
Johnson has shown flashes of his ability to make the extra pass and set his teammates up on offense, but more times than not, the guard has shown tunnel vision with scoring on his mind.
However, with the attention he'll attract on offense from opposing defenders, if he can develop his playmaking to become more consistent and willing, not only will his game rise to another level, but the upside for the Wizards offense could be off the charts,.
Looking at star guards in the league like Anthony Edwards, who's a premiere scorer with improved passing, Johnson's potential could be on that level if he's able to develop that one part of his game.
The sky is the limit for Johnson if he puts the work in.
