There's no doubt that over the years, the Washington Wizards have made many head scratching decisions.
Whether due to impatience, mismanagement or just poor evaluation, the Wizards have become notorious for digging themselves a whole one way or another.
Between giving Kristaps Porzingis up for minimal return, sending Chris Webber to Sacramento in what will forever be looked at as a huge loss for the organization.
However, the most recent nightmare decision that the Wizards made is still haunting them and it continues to get worse by the second.
The nightmare? Giving up on Deni Avdija too soon.
Washington dealt Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers last offseason in the deal that landed the Wizards Malcolm Brogdon and the draft selection to bring Bub Carrington to the DMV.
At the time, the trade didn't seem like a total loss because the Wizards were supposedly getting a capable veteran to mentor their young team and a lottery pick to select a high-upside talent.
And while Carrington may still have the potential to turn things around, what we saw in year one from the rookie hasn't alluded to anything overly positive.
As for Brogdon, the injury-riddled playmaker barely saw the floor for the Wizards, which alone proved to be a loss.
Now, the Virginia product looks poised to leave the Wizards in free agency leaving Washington with a near empty return for Avdija outside of Carrington.
Obviously, Carrington's upside makes things a bit better considering the potential for him to develop into a key player is still on the table.
However, looking at the breakout the Avdija had in Portland down the stretch of the season last year, Washington and their fanbase could be set to see the worst-case scenario for them turn into a reality.
Avidja averaged 23.4 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists through the month of March and added to his strong stretch with a dominant final three games in the month of April, averaging 31.7 points, 13.7 rebounds and seven assists.
With Trail Blazers' head coach Chauncey Billups giving the forward an increased role, the former lottery pick delivered.
Now, he looks poised to have a breakout season heading into 2025-26 and if that is the outcome, fans will look back on this trade and wonder what the front office was thinking when they pulled the trigger on this move.
Avdija's a rising star, Brogdon's set to leave D.C. and Carrington's unproven. A complete disaster for the Wizards.
