The Washington Wizards were one of the first to make a major blockbuster trade to kickoff the offseason and now they seem poised to be the first to make a major blockbuster trade to kick off trade season.
Washington has made their search for a long-term answer at the point guard position crystal clear over the last few months.
Following the bizarre start to the season for Bub Carrington, it seemed as if the Wizards accepted the fate that the former lottery pick would at best be a solid role player for the team moving forward rather than the team's solution.
However, when Atlanta Hawks' star Trae Young became available on the trade market, it proved to be the perfect scenario for general manager Will Dawkins and the Wizards to become aggressive on the trade front once again.
Washington reportedly has been monitoring the star guard's situation in Atlanta following the failure to sign an extension with the team that drafted him No. 5 overall in 2018 this offseason.
Fast forward to the reports on Wednesday that suggested Young had listed the Wizards as his preferred landing spot, discussions seemed to heat up.
Originally, veteran guard CJ McCollum was expected to be the center piece of any deal between the Hawks and the Wizards.
As a result, McCollum being ruled out for Washington's matchup on Wednesday began to raise eyebrows, especially when it matched the Hawks' plan to keep Young sidelined on Wednesday too.
However, this recent report makes it hard to ignore the reality that a trade could be happening as soon as Wednesday night.
Wizards rule out Corey Kispert following Hawks revealed interest
Atlanta's interest in Corey Kispert was revealed on Wednesday night shortly after it became clear that discussions between the Wizards and Hawks were heating up.
Shortly after the revealed interest, Washington added Kispert to the team's injury report preparing him to miss the Wizards' matchup on Wednesday due to "injury management."
With both McCollum and Kispert on the injury report, it seems as if the Wizards are on the verge of making a blockbuster trade that could give them the long-term answer they've been searching for or set them back years.
Regardless, it seems as if a trade is in the final stages of being agreed upon and Washington is expected to move on from both McCollum and Young; at least if their injury report is any indication.
