On paper, acquiring 10-time All-Star Big Man Anthony Davis was a great idea.
Pairing the lob threat in Davis with a playmaking star Point Guard in Trae Young and a big man beside him in Alex Sarr, so Davis can play his natural position as a Power Forward, seems like a match made in heaven.
That’s not even to mention the young small forwards on the roster like Kyshawn George, Will Riley, and presumably AJ Dybansta, which makes this a very promising situation.
This may just have to remain on paper, though, if reports are to be believed, that Anthony Davis does not want to be a Wizard. And if that is the case, you have to move him immediately.
Let’s face it, the Washington Wizards have never been a “destination spot” for a star. Davis is no different in his thinking; if anything, his mindset about the Wizards aligns with the consensus on the team. And that is why he has to be traded.
Anthony Davis only sees the old Wizards
You can’t build a new, exciting culture with someone who can only see what the Wizards were (and to his credit are), not what they can become.
The next decade can be decided on whether you nail this No.1 pick and the pieces around him or not, and if those guys are bought in. Unlike four-time All-Star Trae Young, Davis has made it apparent that he is not.
Members of current contenders like the New York Knicks are proud to reside in the Big Apple, players on the Oklahoma City Thunder want to be in OKC, the San Antonio Spurs young guys and vets love being a member of the organization.
You build surrounded by guys who want to be Wizards, not by guys who want to be out before they’ve even donned the jersey.
Wizards could fetch a good return for AD
Ideally, it would be great to keep Davis. Shall he remain a Wizard, he’s easily the best player on this team and is one of the best to ever play this game at his position.
The NBA Top 75 member is still a shoo-in for 25+ points and 10 rebounds a night when healthy, while still being one of the best in the sport on the defensive end as well. This makes him still very valuable if you trade him.
Despite the injury concerns from him, trading Davis could net you another vet + maybe young guys who can contribute right away, and want to be here.
Will Dawkins and the Wizards' brass must make this team attractive to players, and as great as Davis is, you can’t keep someone here who is telling the NBA world that it is ugly.
