The San Antonio Spurs have officially put the league on notice, and it's come courtesy of Victor Wembanyama's emergence.
At 7-foot-4, the generational talent has become a mystery puzzle that nearly every team in the league is hoping to solve.
Knocking off the reigning NBA champions in the Western Conference Finals officially sent every team into a frenzy this offseason, searching for an answer to counter Wemby and the surging Spurs moving forward.
Ironically, the Washington Wizards, who haven't sniffed a playoff in five years, are arguably the lone team in the leage who not only has an ideal counter for Wembanyama, but may be the best built team to take the Spurs star down.
Wizards are built to defeat Victor Wembanyama already
Alex Sarr alone may be the one player in the league who has the best chance to go toe-to-toe with Wembanyama, at least in terms of best chance to slow down the big man offensively.
The French product has years of experience battling Wemby, and his versatility defensively as a 7-footer himself alone puts him in a rare position that could limit San Antonio's frontcourt star.
On top of Sarr, though, the Wizards have yet another frontcourt weapon in defensive star Anthony Davis set to fortify Sarr's defensive presence heading into next season.
The defensive potential of Washington's frontcourt of Sarr and Davis is expected to be next level, and if the pairing of two defensive aces is half as good as the potential suggests, it's safe to say Washington may be the one team best suited to combat Wembanyama and the Spurs of any team in the league right now.
Then again, the Oklahoma City Thunder thought they were built for the challenge themselves with Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, and now they've been sent back to the drawing board.
Still, given the upside Sarr has shown defensively, especially in matchups against Wemby, it's fair to say the Wizards are the one team in the league that could at least give the Spurs a headache if they're able to take the next step.
Wizards are finally in a better position than other teams
For years, Washington has been viewed as the laughing stock of the league, and the outside perception is finally starting to turn around.
The Wizards may not be as close to an NBA Finals run as other teams in the league, but they've without a doubt put themselves in a position to, if/when a battle with Wemby and the Spurs presents itself, they're built for the moment.
Considering the rest of the league is desperately searching for an answer of their own, it's nice to know that the Wizards may already be best suited to solve the puzzle every team in the league fears moving forward.
