Wizards fans shouldn’t completely dismiss a LeBron James pursuit

LeBron James in D.C. isn't as far out of reach as it used to be.

LeBron James suiting up for the Washington Wizards has long seemed like a pipe dream that nearly every team in the league has had at some point.

The future Hall of Famer will go down as one of the greatest to ever play the game, and with his Los Angeles Lakers future in question, all eyes are looking ahead to what could be the 41-year-old's final season of his career.

If James opts to finish his career outside of LA, which team makes the most sense for his next move? A reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers? A fresh start with the New York Knicks? Restarting down the road with the LA Clippers?

None of the above options seems as far-fetched as landing in D.C., but considering the team's current personnel, including the likes of Trae Young and former teammate Anthony Davis, it feels safe to say that the Wizards pursuing James shouldn't be completely ignored...at least not yet.

Wizards have enough pieces to make a pitch to LeBron

There's no denying that Washington's hopes of returning to the NBA Playoffs less than a year after earning the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft are unlikely, but in a league filled with uncertainty, crazier things have happened.

AD is in Washington, and that alone is a compelling part of a pitch for James if he reaches free agency.

Beyond that, the Wizards also have seemingly secured their point guard of the future in Young, who was rumored to be a long-time target of the Lakers with hopes of adding the star playmaker alongside James and Davis at one point.

The trio never formed in Los Angeles, but if the interest remains, the perfect opportunity has emerged in the DMV.

Not to mention, with the abundance of young talent on the roster, there's a genuine case that Washington has one of the deepest rosters in the league, even if it's hidden by inexperience.

Convincing James to take a leap of faith on what the team is building in the nation's capital would be the biggest challenge of any pursuit, but for the Wizards, their track record already shows why a potential move would be ideal.

LeBron is the best veteran mentor to have

Washington's rebuild has been filled with swings on young talent, but along the way, the team has welcomed several veterans to help mentor the players on the roster.

From Jonas Valanciunas, Khris Middleton, Marcus Smart, and CJ McCollum, the Wizards have managed to have several experienced vets to make a mark on the development of their core.

All that to say, an addition of James wouldn't be just about the fact he's still playing at an All-Star level, but also because he's one of the smartest players the league has ever seen, and if there's any player the Wizards' front office should want their core to learn under, it's James.

Is a signing of James in the offseason likely for the Wizards? No.

However, it shouldn't be completely ignored as a possibility, considering there are plenty of reasons why a move would make sense, no matter how unlikely it is.
