The Washington Wizards continue to be the talk of the offseason, even after selecting AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Anthony Davis' future in Washington remains up in the air, especially after the Golden State Warriors' confirmed interest in the star big man suggested the Wizards' front office could be forced to make a difficult decision if AD felt any desire to be part of the Warriors' master plan to form a Big 4 of Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, LeBron James and Davis.
Nonetheless, outside of the interest on the trade market, the biggest question of the offseason surrounding the Wizards seemed to be how aggressive they would be when free agency opened.
Washington hadn't been linked to many free agents, if any at all.
However, the latest scoop of intel (subscription) from the Stein Line on Monday night/Tuesday morning suggested the Wizards are eyeing a reunion with a former All-Star guard, and not the one people expected.
Wizards interested in signing Russell Westbrook
According to NBA Insider Jake Fischer, the Wizards reportedly have interest in signing Russell Westbrook when free agency opens on Tuesday evening.
"We've reportedly heard an interesting rumble about a pretty prominent Sacramento free agent. League sources tell The Stein Line that Washington has a level of interest in Russell Westbrook."
Westbrook is coming off a solid season with the Kings, where he averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds on 42.7% shooting from the field and 33.8% from three.
The former All-Star guard completely flipped the narrative surrounding his value and ability to contribute after becoming a key piece of the Kings' rotation, starting in 58 games after struggling to find a deal in free agency last summer.
Now, Westbrook seems to be drawing attention from several teams, with the Wizards being the latest squad with reported interest.
Another interesting stat worth mentioning is that the last season in which the former MVP averaged a triple-double came during his lone season with the Wizards in 2020-21, in which he finished the year averaging 22.2 points, 11.7 assists and 11.5 rebounds.
The Wizards' interest in Westbrook may come as a surprise to some, but it's clear that with the team looking to bolster their rotation with veterans who can make an immediate impact, the idea of competing for a playoff spot next season is at the top of their to-do list.
Adding Westbrook to an already loaded roster will make Washington a team to watch next season, and not just for the highlight plays!
Free agency opens on Tuesday evening at 6 PM EST.
