The Washington Wizards bad luck over the years has become a bit of a running joke around the league.
Washington has struggled to build a contending roster over the years, and that comes even with a handful of elite players representing the city on their chest throughout the last decade,
However, arguably the biggest failure when it comes to the Wizards is the team's inability to land premiere talent in the NBA Draft.
Over the years, Washington has taken several swings within the NBA Draft lottery that they have either swung and missed on, or lost patience and were forced to watch their picks emerge into rising stars elsewhere (shoutout Deni Avdija).
Nonetheless, arguably the biggest representation of the Wizards chain of bad luck is the team's results in the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery.
Wizards earned No. 2 overall pick in one of the weakest NBA Drafts
Looking back at the 2024 NBA Draft, not only did the Wizards fail to earn the top pick, but they were forced to select No. 2 overall in arguably the weakest NBA Draft in recent years.
Some would argue Washington got lucky with Alex Sarr falling to No. 2, especially after his breakout season so far this year.
Meanwhile, some would go on record to suggests that Washington's bad luck extends even with the selection of Sarr.
If you were to ask Sam Vecenie of The Game Theory Podcast, he'd argue that the Wizards streak without an All-Star is set to continue, even with the emergence of Sarr.
"If you made me set the over under on All-Star games for Sarr, you know over under 0.5, I'd probably be inclined to take the under even though I do think he's the more likely player from this class (2024) to make an All-Star game," Vecenie said.
Sarr's career path is the least of the Wizards worries and honestly Vecenies bet could be proven wrong sooner rather than later.
However, it is worth taking note of just how poor the Wizards luck is even if Sarr pans out.
Landing the French product may have helped the team avoid worst-case scenario, but the harsh reality that Washington found themselves failing to earn the top pick in one of the worst possible draft classes in years goes to show just how unlucky the Wizards have been throughout the course of their rebuild.
Until Washington can get luck back on their side, the rebuild in the DMV could be a longer process than originally anticipated.
