The Washington Wizards finally feel like a team that has become a legitimate destination over the last year.
Trae Young listed the team as his preferred destination, Alex Sarr forced his way to the DMV, and even Ace Bailey attempted to do the same.
With the potential addition of projected top pick AJ Dybantsa in the 2026 NBA Draft, the Wizards are very well on their way to being a legitimate free agency destination for big-name players.
And if Michael Shearer's dream landing spots for the top free agents means anything, it could suggest the Wizards are one move away from finding their perfect match to bolster their backcourt this summer.
Wizards listed as Ayo Dosunmu's dream landing spot
The upcoming free agency class this offseason isn't loaded with star talent like years past, so there won't be many teams big fish hunting unless it's on the trade market.
Obviously, LeBron James will likely be the top target on the open market, but outside of the future Hall of Famer, the rest of the available players are either veterans looking to ring chase or high-upside swings.
Arguably one of the most intriguing options on the market, though, is Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ayo Dosunmu, who has the chance to finally earn the prominent role he's been searching for.
The Illinois product has shown flashes throughout his entire career of just how explosive a weapon he could be, and after the Chicago Bulls offloaded him to the T-Wolves ahead of the trade deadline, it's safe to say the former second-round pick took advantage of the opportunity.
Dosunmu averaged 14.8 points, 3.6 assists, and 3.4 rebounds on the season, and his impressive postseason showcase offered a 43-point performance that put teams on notice about the player he could become with a larger role.
And based on Shearer's reasoning for why Dosunmu would be a good fit in Washington, it's hard to argue his case:
"A two-way guard with positional flexibility is the exact sort of gap-filler the Wizards need to make a real playoff push next season," Shearer wrote.
Dosunmu would have a legitimate case to earn a starting nod with the Wizards, and even if he didn't, he'd almost certainly manage to earn a major role in Washington that would allow him to showcase his upside.
Still, a deal for Dosumu almost seems to be exactly what it's labeled as, a dream, for an abundance of reasons.
Dosunmu will command more than WAS can offer, will want to contend
Signing Dosunmu would be a dream for the Wizards, especially if they can add him to what is projected to be a deep roster.
However, Washington will have a hard time out-bidding playoff teams for the playmaker, especially the Timberwolves, who seem determined to re-sign their midseason acquisition.
On top of that, Dosunmu spent years in Chicago, where he was forced to miss the playoffs. Now, with a fresh taste of postseason play, it's almost certain he'd prefer going to a team that's almost guaranteed a return to the playoffs rather than signing somewhere that forces him to buy into a vision.
Regardless, if there is mutual interest, a deal for Dosunmu would be a no-brainer.
