Wizards reason for letting Malcolm Brogdon walk couldn't be more clear

Malcolm Brogdon couldn't stay healthy long enough to do what the Wizards needed him to.

The Washington Wizards have completely reshaped their roster over the course of the last few months.

Between bringing in new faces through the trade market, NBA Draft and free agency, cutting ties with current players and letting some familiar names walk, the Wizards team will look vastly different on opening night compared to the roster they ended the 2024-25 season with.

One player in specific that the Wizards opted to let walk this offseason is veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon.

At least, that's how things are looking at the moment barring an unforeseen situation that brings the Virginia product back to play in the DMV for another season.

Looking back at last offseason, the Wizards elected to make a deal for Brogdon as part of the move sending Deni Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers.

The idea of bringing in a guard who has stacked together a more than solid resume through his NBA career, earning the Rookie of the Year Award in 2016-17 and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2022-23.

Brogdon has become a reliabe veteran presence in the league and he's learned how to fill a role as both a starting backcourt option and a premiere reserve during the course of the last two seasons; a trait that the Wizards' front office hoped he could teach to the young core in Washington.

However, the team quickly learned exactly why the Trail Blazers were so eager to move on from the guard last offseason when the regular season came around.

In fact, Washington received a quick reminder prior to the start of the regular season when Brogdon's injury woes flared up with a hand injury forcing him to miss time at the start of the season.

After playing a total of 24 games with the Wizards this past year, it's fair to wonder if the veteran was able to leave any last effects on the team's young core, especially considering the lack of time he spent on the court.

With the team's lack of interest in the guard on the trade market ahead of the NBA trade deadline, it was clear the Wizards would be forced to finish the season out with Brogdon and let him hit unrestricted free agency this offseason.

So far, Washington has seemed uninterested in re-signing the playmaker and considering how last season went, it's easy to understand why the team is preparing to let him walk.
