The Washington Wizards got an instant boost from AJ Dybantsa, and he is already making the franchise look like it made the right call drafting him number one overall. The 6’9 forward had nine points in his first six minutes and showed he is already an elite scorer in a 121-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. There were questions about who Washington should take after winning the draft lottery, but the Wizards look like they got it right after Dybantsa’s debut.
AJ missed the first four games with an ankle injury, but he is finally on the floor. He finished with 19 points, two rebounds, and two assists in 27 minutes of action. Dybantsa made eight of his 12 field goals, and the Wizards outscored the Cavaliers with him on the floor until the final moments. The rookie was hunting James Harden from the opening tip and is proving he can already score like a superstar.
Cameron Boozer is averaging 15.3 points per contest after four games. Darryn Peterson sits at 11.5. Dybantsa surpassed both at the start of the third quarter against the Cavaliers. He also had the entire offense humming and made the Wizards look dangerous.
AJ Dybantsa is already a special scorer
The Wizards were 16th in offensive rating coming into the contest, but they hadn’t had Dybantsa. The rookie is one of their top three scorers. Fans saw the flashes in the preseason, and he kept them coming in his NBA debut. The 19-year-old is special.
Four-time All-Star Trae Young wasn’t looking to score against the Cavaliers. He was setting up Dybantsa. That's why the rookie had a historic nine points in his first six minutes of action. Dybantsa was attacking off the dribble and spotting up. Everything resulted in a bucket.

His 9 first quarter points are the most by a Wizards rookie in their debut since 1997-98 👏 pic.twitter.com/tXo5KInY3k
It is difficult to stop a 6’9 forward capable of getting downhill. The Cavaliers started Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley in the frontcourt. They had plenty of size and rim protection, but it was no match for Dybantsa.
There are questions about his 3-point shot, but it will come in time. Dybantsa is a special scorer who made an immediate impact after missing more than a week with an ankle injury. Good luck stopping the number one pick when he fully rounds into form.
AJ Dybantsa is already impacting winning
The rookie wasn’t out there just hunting shots. The 6’9 forward was getting buckets in the flow of the offense and opening up things for others. Alex Sarr had 13 first-quarter points because the defense had to sell out to slow down Anthony Davis, Trae Young, and Dybantsa.
Bilal Coulibaly was moved to the bench with Dybantsa back and made an immediate impact in his new role. He scored 17 points and made his first seven shots. Coulibaly looked more comfortable, and the entire roster had a bit of extra juice for AJ’s debut.
The 6’9 forward is competing on the defensive end. Nobody is expecting the rookie to be a lockdown option, but Dybantsa is giving effort. That is all the Wizards can ask for. They want to contend, and the rookie is already helping.
The Jazz have lost Peterson’s 117 minutes by 18 points. The Grizzlies are 4-0, but haven’t faced a playoff that reached the playoffs in 2026. Memphis is plus-36 in Boozer’s 132 minutes. The third overall pick looks like a future star, but Dybantsa might already be one.
AJ Dybantsa will push the Wizards into contention quickly
It jumped out immediately how effortlessly Dybantsa could score. He was attacking off the dribble, spotting up, and bending the defense. 19-year-old rookies don’t normally do that, especially in the first game coming off a ten-day absence.
Washington traded for Davis and Young to get back into contention. They haven’t made the playoffs since 2021. The Wizards are done rebuilding. It has been a rough three years where Washington hasn’t won more than 18 games in a season. The Wizards want to make everyone forget by reaching the playoffs in Dybantsa’s rookie year.
The number one overall pick was impressive on both ends of the floor in his debut. Boozer had seven points on two-of-15 shooting to start his NBA career. Peterson had nine points on three of seven. Not Dybantsa. He was an elite and efficient scorer from the jump, even if Wizards fans had to wait a bit longer to see him.
The Washington Wizards have put two stars around their young talent. Fans saw in game one how AJ Dybantsa made his teammates better. This squad will quickly get into playoff contention and should only be better from here. There will be forgettable nights, but they went punch for punch with a squad that was just in the conference finals in the number one pick's debut.
Dybantsa is special. The Wizards were right to draft him number one overall, and his first game just added to the evidence.
