The Washington Wizards just took a gamble on Trae Young that seemingly every team in the NBA was reluctant to make when the Atlanta Hawks made the star guard available for trade.
Young reportedly came to a conclusion that a fresh start would be what's best for him and his career in recent days.
Following a failed attempt to ink a long-term contract extension to stay in Atlanta this offseason, the writing was on the wall for the two sides to go their separate ways, especially after the emergence of breakout star Jalen Johnson this season.
Washington reportedly has kept their tabs on Young's situation since the offseason and when the opportunity for the team to finally land their answer at the point guard position, the Wizards jumped at the chance.
Between the Wizards motivation to get a deal done, mixed with the fact that Young listed the Wizards as his preferred destination, the urgency to find terms on a trade for both sides escalated quickly.
Now, Young lands on one of the most talented young teams in the league, who as of late has strung together an impressive amount of wins.
Young's fit could be seamless and while there are definitely concerns about how his arrival could negatively impact other prospects, there's plenty of potential for the exact opposite to happen.
Trae Young could alter the Wizards rebuild for the better
Obviously, the biggest knock about the undersized guard's game is his shortcoming on the defensive side of the ball as an undersized guard.
While that is certainly a concern, especially for a young team like the Wizards, who have seemingly made it a point of emphasis to focus on defensive versatility and size, there's plenty of reasons why this could be the perfect fit for both the 27-year-old and Washington's young core.
There's a reason why the Wizards' decision makers believed that this fit could get them to the next step of their rebuild and if their bet pays off, it could pay dividends in the future.
Young's playmaking ability will be major for rising star Alex Sarr to take another step in his development.
The potential impact the addition of Young will have on Sarr is the exact reason why Washington rolled the dice on the star guard.
There's no denying that there's concerns about how Young's fit could impact the development of both Kyshawn George and Bub Carrington, who have become primary ball handlers in the Wizards' offense.
However, there's also no telling that a negative impact is definite to happen.
Perhaps Young could truly be the piece to help the Wizards take a massive step forward in their rebuild after all.
