The Washington Wizards' lackluster season puts them one step closer to earning a lottery pick in the 2026 NBA Draft for the seventh consecutive season.

With the NBA set to alter teams' tanking strategies moving forward, capping off their rebuilding efforts with a top draft pick is the perfect scenario for Washington as they prepare to enter next season hoping to contend in the Eastern Conference behind the superstar duo of Trae Young and Anthony Davis.

And if you asked anybody in the Wizards organization or fanbase entering the season, the potential to add a talent like Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson this offseason would be a dream addition this offseason.

Looking at the recent NBA Mock Draft from FanSided's very own Christopher Kline, those Peterson dreams are one step closer to coming into fruition.

However, what was once a dream addition is now being viewed as a questionable fit.

Wizards need to think long and hard if Darryn Peterson is the right fit

Peterson's freshman season was filled with highlights that offered encouragement about the player he could develop into at the next-level.

The combo guard proved to be the scoring threat he entered his first-year with the Jayhawks as, but the former five-star recruit also showed plenty of concerning characteristics that have made a no-brainer pick become more of a big-time decision that team's will have to decide if it makes sense to commit to.

Not only did the star guard show questionable work ethic, but several instances arose that had many questioning his impact as a teammate, which alone could put a major wrinkle in team's scouting report for the guard.

And for a team like the Wizards, who've already built a strong young core built on a foundation of strong work-ethic, Peterson's fit may not be one that makes the team better, but instead could set them back.

Washington should pivot if there's any concern about Peterson

If the Wizards are fortunate enough to land the No. 2 overall pick, they'll have plenty of options to choose from, even if top prospect AJ Dybantsa is off the board.

Cam Boozer would be an ideal pick, especially if the Wizards hope to bolster their frontcourt, but if Washington is locked in on adding a guard, Darius Acuff Jr. has already gotten the approval of the team's star guard, Trae Young.

If there's any sign for concern about Peterson landing in the DMV, the Wizards should stay clear, even if they feel like the talent is too good to pass on, especially with many scouts grading Acuff Jr. as a higher-upside pick.
