The Washington Wizards held a recent interview with top prospect Darryn Peterson as they continue to evaluate their options in the 2026 NBA Draft.
Washington is clearly doing their due diligence ahead of the draft, and interviewing top prospects is part of the process. That said, speaking with Peterson shouldn't come as a shock, especially considering he's viewed as a clear candidate to be selected No. 1 overall.
However, Peterson's insight on his interview with Washington raises eyebrows, not just about how deep Washington is digging on the standout guard, but about the focus in their evaluation of the prospect.
Wizards focusing on Darryn Peterson's character
Following his interview with the Wizards, Peterson was asked about his conversation with Washington's brass.
The most noteworthy comments about his interview with the team holding the No. 1 overall pick stem from the Wizards' focus on finding out who the playmaker is as a person, not just a basketball player.
"I was surprised by how much they wanted to talk about Darryn as a person instead of basketball.... that's pretty cool," Peterson said.
Obviously, determining the character of a prospect is at the top of a team's to-do list, especially when it comes to selecting them with the top pick.
And with Peterson, it's clear that the talent speaks for itself. Nonetheless, after his character was brought into question during his freshman season with the Jayhawks due to his inability to stay on the court, specifically during big moments, Washington's deep dive to determine who the prospect is as a person speaks volumes about their clear concern about selecting him.
Wizards aren't concerned about Peterson's fit, focused on his character
There's no doubt that within the process of determining if Peterson is their guy at No. 1, his fit on the roster will come into play.
Despite that, Washington focusing on who he is as a person suggests the Wizards are hoping to get a better feel about his character to make their own determination on the criticism from his lone season at Kansas.
Character will play a huge factor in the Wizards' decision, especially considering that the upside of the guard suggests he could become a superstar at the next level.
Of course, Washington has plenty of reason to lean towards AJ Dybantsa with their top selection, but if Peterson truly is their choice at No. 1, it's clear that the team is checking all the bases to answer every question they have, including the ongoing character concerns.
