The Washington Wizards have a major decision to make with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and as of now, there's no clear direction towards which way the team is leaning.

Washington has the pick of their choose, and in a loaded draft class, two players stand out at the top: AJ Dybantsa and Darryn Peterson.

Over the last few months, Dybantsa has seemed to be the most likely prospect to be the top pick, especially when the Wizards landed the first selection.

However, the franchise could be persuaded to change directions in their evaluation, especially if they take the advice from two of the best players to ever suit up for the organization.

John Wall & Gilbert Arenas endorsing Darryn Peterson to go No. 1

Soon after Wall's good luck helped the Wizards earn the top pick in the NBA Draft Lottery, the former All-Star guard let his thoughts be known by suggesting Kansas guard Darryn Peterson would be his choice.

Considering his new role as the President of Basketball Operations for Howard University, it's clear that the high-IQ basketball mind is preparing for his new job, where pivotal decisions will be key.

Still, even with Wall's stamp of approval for Peterson, it felt like the consensus pinned Dybantsa as the better fit for Washington.

Nonetheless, with another franchise icon making his stance on the No. 1 pick for Washington clear, it feels as if the Wizards legends are sending out signs that Peterson could be the next star in the DMV.

There's no doubt that general manager Will Dawkins has probably at least seen the wave of support for Peterson to go No. 1, and while he certainly has a clear case to be the top guy selected in this talented class, Washington needs to do what is best for them in the long run.

Wizards have to make the best decision for their future

Peterson's talent is undeniable, but his fit alongside the current core, especially Trae Young, raises questions about his fit in D.C., after the incoming rookie's remarks about his preference to play point guard at the next level.

Dybantsa not only fits a direct need, but he also offers the same superstar potential that Peterson does, as well as physical traits that prove he's one of the most dynamic athletes the league has ever seen.

Washington should consider the former players' thoughts, but it's also important that their final decision comes down to what they feel will have not only an immediate impact, but an impact that could help them avoid selecting at No. 1 any time soon.
