While this season may have been filled with plenty of losses for the Washington Wizards, the team got the opportunity to see plenty of flashes along the way.
Arguably one of the most promising bright spots of them all was the sophomore leap from former first-round pick Kyshawn George, who proved to not only be a hidden gem from the 2025 NBA Draft, but a frontcourt cornerstone Washington could build around moving forward.
Unfortunately, the breakout playmaker's second year came to an abrupt halt when a injury setback sidelined him for an extended period of time.
Fans held out hope that the Miami product could possibly return to the lineup down the stretch for the chance to build more chemistry alongside his teammates, but those dreams came to an end on Thursday with the Wizards most recent injury update on George.
Kyshawn George ruled out for remainder of the season
In a recent update from the Wizards, George was re-evaluated as he continues to recover, but the report offered the news fans feared:
"George, who sustained a Grade 2 ulnar collateral ligament tear in his left elbow on March 2, was reevaluated Wednesday," the team announced. "In conjunction with imaging performed by elbow specialist Dr. Keith Meister at TMI Sports Medicine & Orthopedics in Arlington, Texas, it was determined George required additional healing and will miss the remainder of the season"
Although the update on the forward was expected, the reality that fans will have to wait several months to see the high-upside wing back on the court is a bit disappointing.
Still, what he showed this season is beyond promising.
George is a foundational piece for the Wizards
George finishes his sophomore season averaging 14.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists, while shooting 43.8% from field goal range and 38.1% from beyond the arc.
Not only did the 22-year-old prove his versatility as an offensive scorer, but he showed throughout the season that he can be a willing playmaker with the ball in his hands.
And that's not even mentioning his defensive potential.
Washington saw plenty from the forward throughout the course of the season and although his 2025-26 season came to a brutal end, the fact that he's expected to be ready for the 2026-27 season is an encouraging sign.
In the midst of George's absence, the Wizards have gotten the opportunity to see rookie standout Will Riley emerge, which alone will be extremely beneficial for the team moving forward.
